“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.”  George R.R. Martin, writer

I will start with some of my favourite titles, sorted by genre:

Good oldies (Classic never Dies):  ''Vanity Fair'' William Makepeace Thackeray (very funny), ''The picture of Dorian Gray'' (and other novels by Oscar Wilde)- not recommended for depressed people, ''Eugene Onegin'' (Alexander Pushkin) – very wintery (as only in Russia can be)
Fantasy: ''Chronicles of Narnia'' C.S. Lewis,  ''The Hobbit or There and back again'' J.R.R.Tolkien, ''Stardust'' Neil Gaiman – all of these books also have their screen version but nothing can replace the Book.
Adventure: ''The Count of Monte Cristo'' Alexandre Dumas –  ''Vengeance is mine'' saith the Lord – not in this case, novels by Jules Verne (such a genious mind)
Historical fiction novels: ''The song of Troy'' Colleen McCullough – contains of many POVs (Pieces of View): Priam, Hector, Achilles, Helen of Troy and many others), ''The other Boleyn girl'' Phillippa Gregory , ''Kleopatra'' Karen Essex
Love: ''The orange girl'' Jostein Gaarder, ''The time traveler's wife'' Audrey Niffenegger, ''The feast of roses'' Indu Sundaresan
Comic: ''Neither here nor there'' Bill Bryson (his backpack around Europe), ''How to kill your husband (and other handy household hints)'' Kathy Lette
Detective fiction:  Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Cristie are the two most accomplished authors of the genre. They will last forever.
